Growing Up in Grand Rapids
I grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Grand Rapids, Michigan. My dad worked at the local factory, and my childhood was built around three things: family, hard work, and sports.
Backyard baseball in the summer. Friday night high school football under the lights. Gathering around the TV with my dad, uncles, and neighbors to watch the Lions, Tigers, and Red Wings. Those were the moments that shaped me — and taught me that sports aren’t just games. They’re the thread that connects families and communities.
I also learned something else growing up: the value of a dollar. I watched my parents work hard for everything we had, and I carried that respect into adulthood. Which is why, years later, seeing hundreds of dollars vanish into cable bills every month felt personal.
The Move That Changed Everything
In my late 20s, an IT opportunity brought me to Toronto. I fell in love with the city’s energy, met my wife Sarah — a Canadian school teacher — and we built a life together. We now have two kids: Emily, 9, and Jack, 7. Both already sports fanatics like their old man.
Living between Michigan and Toronto gave me something unique: a front-row seat to both American and Canadian sports broadcasting. I saw the same problem on both sides of the border — fans getting squeezed by rising bills, confusing subscription services, and the growing nightmare of needing 7+ different apps just to watch the teams they love.

One afternoon, I opened my mail to find a cable bill for $218. I stared at it for a long time. Dozens of channels I never watched. Hidden fees. Equipment rental charges. And still, half the sports I wanted to watch were blacked out or required yet another subscription.
I’m an IT guy. I knew there had to be a better way.
